Case

Greensburg, PA -- The last of three defendants pled guilty in the gruesome homicide of Matthew Genard, 50, of Youngwood, on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.

Michael Covington pled guilty to third degree murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. He was sentenced to serve 25 to 60 years in prison.

Genard was found stabbed to death inside his Youngwood home in November of 2017.

Covington was charged with robbery and homicide, along with Christopher David and Jason Sullenberger. David and Sullenberger have already been sentenced after pleading guilty to third degree murder.

Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole W. Ziccarelli said, “Today, Michael Covington pled guilty to third degree murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery in exchange for 25-60 years of incarceration. I believe this sentence properly balances the community’s need for safety and secures a significant punishment for Mr. Covington. With the consent of the victim’s family, this avoids going to trial and guarantees a conviction with a lengthy period of incarceration. I hope the resolution of this case brings Mr. Genard’s family closure knowing Mr. Covington will be incarcerated for at least the next two decades. I thank Assistant District Attorneys Pete Caravello and Anthony Iannamorreli for their dedication and considerations prosecuting this case.”
