Oklahoma Borough, PA -- An Apollo woman is facing theft charges after a state police investigation revealed she pocketed more than $37,000 meant for her injured relative.
Vanessa Lewis, 29, was charged with theft by deception, financial exploitation of a care dependent person, receiving stolen property, and theft by failure to deposit funds.
State police were contacted by the victim's family in April regarding missing funds meant for the victim.
The victim was injured in a motorcycle accident in 2022 and was unable to care for himself.
Following the accident, Lewis, the victim's relative, established a GoFundMe account and bank account to help the victim in his time of need.
The victim's family was granted access to the accounts after being appointed legal guardian and observed multiple transfers from the bank account, including wire transfers for more than $20,000.
State police said bank records showed the account previously had a balance of more than $40,000 in August of 2024, and by March of 2025, the account had a balance of $3,043.
The victim's family said no funds have been received or distributed for the victim's care since his accident.
State police executed search warrants on multiple bank accounts, Venmo and PayPal accounts belonging to Lewis.
In total, investigators said Lewis spent or transferred more than $37,000 from bank accounts benefiting the victim to her own personal bank accounts for her own personal gain.
Lewis was arraigned and released on $10,000 unsecured bail.
