Greensburg, PA -- A Westmoreland County Common Pleas Judge ruled Wednesday that James Young will remain incarcerated as he awaits a new trial in a 1993 fatal fire that killed his family.
Common Pleas Judge Michael Stewart denied Young's request to be released on bail as he awaits a new trial for the deadly fire that claimed the lives of his wife and two children in Jeannette.
Young was convicted by a jury in 1995 with three counts of homicide after being charged in 1993 for the deadly fire on 14th Street in Jeannette.
The Westmoreland County District Attorney's Office remained opposed to Young's release and contend Young should remain incarcerated without bail as he faces prosecution for homicide.
In March of 2025, Young's conviction was overturned, and a new trial was granted by a Westmoreland County Common Pleas Judge after modern fire standards were introduced.
Young is arguing that the conviction was based on outdated fire science which classified the fire as arson 30 years ago.
Prosecutors have argued that the fire was intentionally set due to circumstantial evidence and witness accounts.
At Wednesday's hearing, Judge Stewart also denied the defense's motion citing a violation of Rule 600 and Young's right to a speedy trial.
A new trial date has not been scheduled.
