Mount Pleasant, PA -- Mount Pleasant Police charged a grandmother and a mother with aggravated assault of a 10-year-old child.
Elma Ritenour, 68, and Mary Shroyer, 48, are facing charges of aggravated assault of a victim less than 13, endangering the welfare of children, simple assault, harassment, and disorderly conduct.
Mount Pleasant Police were notified of the alleged abuse following a ChildLine report.
The report stated the child, 10, was physically harmed, not provided medications, not fed regularly, among other abuse allegations.
The child reported to a mandates reporter that Shroyer and Ritenour physically abused them and was afraid to go home.
A forensic interview was conducted with juvenile who initially lied to investigators because they were allegedly instructed to by the defendants.
The victim allegedly made statements that they were only allowed to shower once a week and denied food and bathroom privileges, at times.
The person who reported the abuse allegedly observed bruises and bed bug bites on the child.
The child was diagnosed with a concussion in December after they were allegedly struck and pushed by Ritenour and Shroyer.
A follow up forensic interview was conducted with the child who said they are rarely provided food outside of what they eat at school, and sleep on the floor without blankets.
The child said they were instructed to stand in the corner of a room for three days as a form of punishment and if caught sitting or sleeping, they would be beaten with a belt or struck in the head.
Ritenour and Shroyer were arraigned and released on $25,000 unsecured bail.
