North Huntingdon Township, PA -- North Huntingdon Township Police are investigating a jury duty scam that left a local woman out $3,000.
Police were contacted on June 10, 2025 after the victim received a text message that appeared to be from the Westmoreland County Clerk of Courts.
The message indicated that the victim failed to show for federal jury duty. The number provided to the victim was the number for the Westmoreland County Courthouse, 724-830-3000.
The victim called the spoofed number and spoke to an unknown male who informed the victim she missed a federal jury duty summons, and she needed to pay a fine or a bench warrant would be issued for her.
The male on the phone told the victim she was being tracked, and she would be charged with contempt and arrested if she told anyone about the call.
Investigators said the victim received a barcode via text and was told to send the $3,000 through a pay service at Walmart.
The victim subsequently sent the money through the Vanilla Direct banking service at Walmart, according to police.
Officers attempted to track the transaction at Walmart, but it appeared to be untraceable.
North Huntingdon Police are warning residents to be aware of similar scams where numbers appear to be spoofed.
You are urged to never send gift cards, wire transfers, prepaid credit cards, or cryptocurrency as a form of payment to someone you do not know.
Potential victims are urged to hang up and report the suspicious activity to your local police department.
