Greensburg, PA -- Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole W. Ziccarelli along with area police departments are warning about a spoofing scam targeting local residents.
Monessen Police are investigating after a victim reported a significant theft from their checking accounts following a spoofed phone call.
The victim reported the spoofed number appeared to be PNC Bank. The caller identified themselves, as “Matthew”, and alerted the customer to fraudulent charges on their account.
The caller knew the last few digits on the victim’s debit card and said the bank would be issuing a new card and asked for the victim’s PIN.
About $4,000, in total, was taken from two checking accounts.
Investigators said spoofing scams are not new, but they are becoming more sophisticated.
You can protect yourself by never giving out your personal information, hang up and call your financial institution directly or visit a branch, and call and report it to the fraud support line.
