Greensburg, PA -- When Latrobe Police Officer Zachary Lukon started his shift at the annual Great American Banana Split Celebration in downtown Latrobe in late August, he was looking to man the department’s police booth, but instead found himself behind the wheel of a runaway vehicle.
Lukon was standing on Ligonier Street and noticed a vendor vehicle across the street slowly making its way down the pavement unattended and picking up speed.
Lukon sprang into action and jumped into the open driver’s door of the vehicle to stop it from careening into festival goers, vendors and other vehicles.
Not only was Lukon recognized by Latrobe City Council for his heroic actions that day, he was honored today with a proclamation for his bravery by the Westmoreland County Commissioners.
Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole W. Ziccarelli congratulated and thanked Officer Lukon for his dedication and service to protecting his community.
