Unity Township, PA -- Pennsylvania State Police, with the assistance of the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office, are investigating a theft by deception case where a woman was scammed out of approximately $14,000.
Troopers spoke with the Unity Township woman, 74, in January regarding the theft.
She told police she was contacted by an unknown man about her McAfee account being wrongfully credited $14,000 instead of $140.
She was told to transfer the money from her bank account into Bitcoin to return it.
The victim withdrew $14,000 from her Huntingdon National Bank account and was told to purchase the Bitcoin from a kiosk at the Sunoco gas station on Lowry Avenue in Jeannette.
The victim sent the receipt displaying the account number and other personal information to the man who contacted her, and is out $14,000.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating and urge residents to never give out personal information, never buy gift cards or send money electronically to someone you do not know, hang up and call police if it seems suspicious.
